How Coffee, Tea, and Wine Stain Your Teeth (and What to Do About It)

If your teeth have gradually yellowed over the years, your daily beverages are likely a major contributor. Coffee, tea, and red wine are among the most common culprits of extrinsic tooth staining — but the solution isn't necessarily giving them up.

The Science of Staining

Tooth enamel isn't perfectly smooth. Under a microscope, it's covered in microscopic ridges and pits. Dark-colored compounds called chromogens in coffee, tea, and wine settle into these tiny crevices. Tannins — polyphenols found in all three beverages — make the staining compounds stick to enamel even more effectively. Tea actually contains more tannins than coffee, which is why heavy tea drinkers often notice more staining than coffee drinkers.

Which Beverages Stain the Most?

In order of staining potential: black tea is actually the worst offender, followed by red wine, then coffee. Green tea stains less than black tea but can still cause a grayish discoloration over time. White wine doesn't stain on its own, but its acidity temporarily softens enamel, making teeth more vulnerable to staining from other foods.

Practical Strategies

You don't need to quit your morning coffee. Instead, try these evidence-based approaches:

  • Use a straw for cold coffee and tea to minimize contact with front teeth
  • Rinse with water after drinking staining beverages — a quick swish makes a real difference
  • Don't brush immediately after acidic drinks; wait 30 minutes to avoid brushing softened enamel
  • Add milk to coffee or tea — casein protein binds to tannins and reduces staining
  • Schedule regular cleanings to remove surface stains before they set in
